Dyslipidemia

Dyslipidemia

slipidemia is a major risk factor for CHD and refers to lipid abnormalities such as

🔼high total cholesterol

🔼elevated LDL

🔼 elevated TG

🔼low HDL

🔼 high lipoprotein (a)

Dyslipidemia could be familial or secondary

Which include:

1. type 2 diabetes mellitus

2. hypothyroidism

3. excessive alcohol consumption

4. cholestatic liver disease

5. kidney disease

6. smoking and obesity

  • In type 2 DM, the lipid abnormalities include increased triglycerides,

LDL and low HDL.

  • in hypothyroidism increased Total cholesterol

and TG.

  • In excessive alcohol consumption can cause hypertriglyceridemia.
  • In primary biliary cirrhosis

Marked elevations of serum cholesterol with high levels of HDL .

but this did not place them at a higher cardiovascular risk.

  • The dyslipidemia of obesity is characterized by increased levels of TG, LDL , apolipoprotein B and decreased levels of HDL .
  • Chronic cigarette smoking is associated with an increase in plasma TG a decrease in HDL with hyperinsulinemia thus leading to increased cardiovascular risk.
  • In persons with nephrotic syndrome, LDL , Total cholesterol and TG are high
  • Chronic cigarette smoking is associated with an increase in plasma TG a decrease in HDL with hyperinsulinemia thus leading to increased cardiovascular risk.
  • In persons with nephrotic syndrome, LDL , Total cholesterol and TG are high

whereas in chronic kidney disease, Total cholesterol is low or normal but TG tend to be high due to diminished clearance from a reduction in the activity of lipoprotein lipase.
